#S. O. S. Solidarity with Arauca – Humanitarian Caravan to Arauca and Human Rights Forum

Humanitarian Caravan to Arauca and Human Rights Forum

FOR LIFE, PEACE AND PERMANENCE IN THE TERRITORY

The Araucanian people live hours of terror. The war is the burden that continues to weigh with blood and pain on the memory of its people. Since the beginning of January 2022, we have witnessed an escalation of the conflict that has provoked a new and serious humanitarian crisis in the department of Arauca, a situation that in a few weeks has left massacres, forced displacements, attacks against social organizations and a painful toll of 80 people killed, not counting the deaths on the other side of the border; and about 50 citizens missing. The measures taken so far by the government have not resulted in security and protection for the life and integrity of the civilian population, particularly social leaders and human rights defenders.

For these reasons, the political and social organizations, the human rights movement and all those who struggle for the search for a total, integral peace based on social justice, call to join efforts to mobilize all our forces to accompany the Araucanian people and their social and human rights organizations, to demand a political solution to the current armed conflict and integral peace, respect for life and to allow the creation of spaces for dialogue to resolve the economic and social problems accumulated over the years. As we move forward, respect for IHL and all pre-established international mechanisms for the guarantee, protection and promotion of the human rights of the communities must be guaranteed.

In this sense, we invite all democratic sectors of society, churches, intellectuals and academics, politicians, ethnic, social and community leaders, municipal councils, public corporations and mayors to join the Humanitarian Caravan that will leave Bogota from March 21 to 23 and arrive at the Regional Forum for Human Rights and IHL, to be held in Arauca capital from March 24 to 25. We also invite international delegates to accompany and participate in this journey (multilateral organizations, Brotherhood Network, Churches, Peace Brigades International, diplomatic missions, media).

The caravan route begins on Monday March 21 at 4 am in Bogota, arriving in Yopal (Casanare), continuing to Tame, Saravena, Fortul, Arauquita and arriving in Arauca (Capital) on March 23 at 5 pm. In each place, and as far as possible, there will be a meeting with local authorities and a rally or wake with the communities. The Regional Forum for Human Rights and IHL will meet on March 24 and 25. The Organizing Committee is requesting the entities and social organizations to designate their delegates; we also request their economic contributions to cover transportation costs; lodging expenses on the road and in Arauca will be assumed by each delegation.
